The collection of original data by way of a research study is termed primary research. Primary research is designed to answer specific questions and data is gathered directly from the market or the "field". Typical primary market research includes surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, interviews, and direct observation. The primary data is owned by the researcher or research group and may be considered proprietary. Syndicated studies are primary research efforts in which the data is shared by those who buy into the original study.
When data is collected from existing research studies, it is considered to be secondary research. Secondary research is more accessible, more affordable, and more generalized than primary research.
